Essential Oils To Use For Meditation

Meditation & Essential Oils

As a yoga teacher and oil lover, I’ve been incorporating essential oils into my classes, and meditation practice for years... Initially it was a way to treat the student during savasana via head massage (yes, they are divine!) Now, I use the oils as a tool to deepen the meditation practice, or to make it a little more appealing, relaxing and well, pretty-smelling... Here are 3 of my favourite essential oil rituals when practicing meditation.

Balance

(Spruce Leaf, Ho Wood Leaf, Frankincense Resin, Blue Tansy Flower and Blue Chamomile Flower)

An earthy blend that grounds your emotions so that your whole body can feel completely at ease. I like to mindfully massage a few drops onto the soles of my feet before meditating. This blend is also helpful if you’re feeling emotional or anxious throughout the day – simply apply a drop or two to your wrists. I also recommend using this blend in the evening before bed, as it will help you drift off to sleep.

Frankincense

My go-to oil for most meditations. I'll often apply a drop to my third eye centre or diffuse 6 or so drops. Frankincense is the most powerful essential oil for the spirit. It promotes grounding, balancing, and openness, connecting you with your spiritual self.

This oil really is an all-rounder, and you can use it anytime, but please be wary that it is photosensitive, which means applying it to your third eye before sun exposure isn't recommended.

Elevation

(Lavandin Flower, Tangerine Peel, Lavender Flower/Leaf, Amyris Bark, Clary Sage Flower/Leaf, Hawaiian Sandalwood Wood, Ylang Ylang Flower, Ho Wood Leaf, Osmanthus Flower, Lemon Myrtle Leaf, and Melissa Flower/Leaf essential oils)

As the name suggests, this blend is an elevating and invigorating blend that's perfect for those morning meditations. This blend is an appealing combination of essential oils that elevate your mood, promote feelings of confidence, and increase your energy. I recommend applying this oil to your pulse points on your wrists and neck before practicing or diffusing.

Essential Oils To Use For Each Chakra

Muladhara Chakra (Root) ~ Frankincense or Patchouli ~ Massage 1-2 drops onto soles of feet.

Svadhistana Chakra (Sacral) ~ Ylang Ylang or Sandalwood ~ Apply 1 drop to sacral chakra region.

Manipura Chakra (Solar Plexus) ~ Cinnamon or Peppermint ~ Massage 1-2 drops onto belly in a clockwise direction.

Anahata Chakra (Heart) ~ Geranium or Rose ~ Apply 1 drop to heart centre.

Visshudha Chakra (Throat) ~ Lavender or Eucalyptus ~ Apply 1 drop to throat area.

Ajna Chakra (Third Eye) ~ Lavender ~ Apply 1 drop to third eye centre.

Sahasrara (Crown) ~ Frankincense ~ Either diffuse or massage onto crown.
